About the Author
Dr. Richard G. Macdonald is a retired podiatric surgeon living in Washington, Illinois. His sons, Richard and Philip, and daughter, Annie, encouraged him to pursue unanswered questions about the role played by the author’s father, Lt. Col. Hugh Macdonald, M.D., in the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp in Ebensee, Austria. Two years of research in the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Holocaust museum and library in Ebensee showed that his father’s medical unit had been denied its rightful place in the historical record. Inside the Gates provides not only the true account, but also a proud son’s depiction of his father’s military record.
